The Asia Cup final defeat by Sri Lanka put the selectors to the test and they have forced to re-consult the squad for the England series, the tour of New Zealand, and the ICCT Twenty20 World Cup.
The men in green lost twice to Sri Lanka in three days and many questions have been raised regarding the selection of some players.
Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, and Khushdil Shah are under threat but Shaan Masood’s excellent form has a bright chance of making it into the squad.
The selection committee had completed the selection of potential players and as per the proposed schedule, the national team was to be announced on Tuesday, but the two-match defeat against Sri Lanka overturned the entire plan.
During the ongoing National T20 in Multan, Chief Selector Muhammad Wasim sat with his fellow selectors and watched the final match and also expressed concern over the performance of some other players including Fakhar Zaman, Khushdil Shah, and Asif Ali.
Muhammad Wasim has returned to Lahore after initial talks with the selectors. They are awaiting the return of captain Babar Azam and head coach Saqlain Mushtaq to consult them on the changes in the team.
A report will also be taken from the medical panel on the fitness of Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is undergoing rehabilitation in London.
He will be included in the New Zealand and World Cup squads subject to fitness.
The England team is arriving in Karachi on September 15 for seven T20I matches while the PCB has to announce the teams for the ICC World Cup before September 15.
The selection committee wants to give an opportunity to players who can perform well in Australian conditions.
